Diversification through investment in the local community, environment and economy.

Luss Estates Company was created in 1961,
but our story begins in the 12th century.

The village of Luss has been at the heart of the Clan Colquhoun lands for over 600 years. Through marriage, the Clan Colquhoun first came to the bonnie banks in 1368 when Robert, the 5th of Colquhoun married the daughter of the 6th Laird of Luss. Robert’s wife’s name has been lost to the sands of time and she is remembered only as ‘the fair maid of Luss’.

In 1776 Sir James established the town of Helensburgh, naming it after his wife, Helen.

The current clan chieftain, Sir Malcolm Colquhoun, 31st of Colquhoun, 33rd of Luss, is committed to supporting and sustaining the local community and preserving the heritage and historical lands of this ancient clan for future generations. The Clan Colquhoun’s chronicle is chequered, intriguing and dramatic. Find out more here

The lands in the Loch Lomond area have been held within the Colquhoun family since 1150 AD, when the lands were granted to the Laird of Luss. The Colquhouns originated at Old Kilpatrick on the River Clyde, and through the marriage of Robert of Colquhoun to the daughter of the Laird of Luss in 1358, the Luss lands came into their hands.

The Colquhoun charters to the Barony of Colquhoun, which runs eastwards from Dumbarton for six miles towards Glasgow, granted around 1240 AD. Since those times, there has been a constant Colquhoun presence in the area.
