Luss Sheep Dog Trials

Luss Estate Company was delighted to host the Luss sheep dog trial over the 1st and 2nd of October.

The trial was organised by Alistair Mackenzie, one of the Shepherds on the Estate and an expert and accomplished trialist in his own right.  About 80 dogs competed across two days with competitors coming from the far north of Scotland as well as more locally.  The trial was split into two categories; Local and Open.

After two days of keen competition, the local event was won by Alistair McKenzie of Luss Estate’s Blairnairn farm, with his other team coming a close second. Third place was Allen McKenzie of Luss Estate’s Ballyvoulin Farm.

The open competition was won by Ian Lockhart of Dalrymple.

Sir Malcolm Colquoun, Chairman of Luss Estate Company, presented the cups to both winners.  He said “I am delighted to welcome this event back to Luss, and look forward to watching the competition in future years.  The Estate is committed to the rural economy, and it was particular pleasing to see so many young shepherds and their dogs taking part.  The first name on the locals cup is Robert Dickson with Dusk, who won it in 1937.  It is crucial to keep these skills alive in rural Scotland , and I sincerely hope that this event continues for many years to come.  My congratulations and thanks to everyone who took part.”

Alistair Mackenzie said “it was a real treat to host this event again at Luss.  The weather wasn’t great but we all had a good day out, our dogs were able to test their skills, and after all the Covid isolation it was fantastic to catch up with each other after such a long time.  Next years event will be at the beginning of October again, and we look forward to seeing everyone again I hope.”
