Renewable energy: powering our future.
Luss Estates has a proud heritage of investment in renewables, from mid-scale projects such as the Glen Douglas Hydro scheme to our biomass boiler supplying energy to our hotel.
Situated at the start of the Scottish Highlands with its impressive topography and substantial annual precipitation, we are able to reduce Luss Estates’ carbon footprint by harnessing water as a powerful natural resource.
Luss Estates’ initial hydroelectric scheme is a 1MW ‘run of the river’ scheme, located on the River Douglas, where an impassible natural waterfall excluded migratory fish such as salmon and sea trout.

Biomass scheme - Loch Lomond Arms.
Our in-house biomass boiler supplies heat to the Loch Lomond Arms and self-catering cottages via a woodchip fuel source.
In 2018, Luss Estates entered into a long-term lease agreement on a peppercorn rent in Arrochar to facilitate the development of a community hydroelectric scheme benefiting the communities of Luss, Arrochar and Tarbet. The scheme's profits are equally distributed among these communities to support local projects.
Since it’s completion, the Arrochar Community Scheme has achieved positive performance in its first two years, resulting in the payment of its initial dividends.
