Luss Estates Shortlisted for Scottish Rural Awards 2018

Luss Estates is delighted to have been shortlisted in both the Business Divesification and the Conservation & The Environment categories for the Scottish Rural Awards 2018. The Scottish Rural Awards

The Scottish Rural Awards are a benchmark of excellence in Scotland’s countryside; a celebration of enterprise, innovation, dedication and community spirit of those who live in rural Scotland. Now in their fourth year, the Scottish Rural Awards are partnered by Scottish Field and the Scottish Countryside Alliance, in association with the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland (RHASS).

Luss Estates won the category of Business Diversification at the 2017 awards, and is pleased to have been recognised in this category once again. The shortlisting for the Conservation & The Environment category is based on a number of wide ranging projects including Arrochar Community Hydro. This hydro scheme is on land leased by Luss Estates for a peppercorn rent in order to enable the local development trusts of Luss & Arden Development Trust and Arrochar & Tarbet Development Trust to generate income to reinvest in their communities. In 2010 Luss Estates completed construction of our own 1MW ‘run of the river’ hydro scheme. Based on the success of this scheme, and using feasibility studies carried out on other sites, Luss Estates proposed to the local development trusts the concept which became Arrochar Community Hydro.

Other conservation work includes a significant peatland restoration project, the second phase of which was completed by SNH earlier this year. In addition, native species planting, as part of Luss Estates’ forestry work, is an important step to protecting biodiversity on the land.
